Recently, the Food and Drug Administration has put forth a proposal to begin measures to completely eliminate the use of artificial trans fat in food. The proposal, open for comment from the public for 60 days, seeks to ban the use of trans fats by deeming them unsafe. To do this, they propose using the legal category that allows salt and caffeine to be “generally recognized as safe” for public consumption.
Trans fats are proven to clog arteries and remain a chief contributor to heart disease. Given how hard it will be for anyone to prove that trans fats are safe when there is so much documentation of the opposite, it seems that the proposal will become reality soon enough. Read more.
